I Have No Hot Water. What Should I Do?

There is never a good time to lose hot water. It is usually discovered first thing in the morning when someone jumps in the shower and realises pretty quickly something is wrong. On the Bass Coast and South Gippsland no one wants a cold shower!

The first thing to do is not panic. A loss of hot water does not always mean the whole system needs replacing. Sometimes it is a simple issue, other times the unit has reached the end of its life.

A few quick things you can check first:

If you have an electric hot water system, check whether the power has tripped at the switchboard. Sometimes a faulty element or thermostat can trip the safety switch.

If you have a gas hot water system, check whether the pilot light is still on. If the pilot is out or the gas supply has been interrupted, the system may stop heating water altogether.

For continuous flow systems, sometimes an error code will appear on the controller or unit itself. That code can often point towards the problem.

Another thing to think about is whether you have simply run out of stored hot water. Larger households, guests staying over, or back-to-back showers can empty a storage system quicker than people expect, especially during winter across Bass Coast and South Gippsland when incoming water temperatures are colder.

If there is water leaking around the system, strange noises, rusty coloured water, or the tank is older and struggling to keep up, there is a good chance the system may need repairs or replacement.

One thing we see fairly often is people assuming the problem is the hot water system itself when the issue is actually electrical, gas related or a valve failure somewhere else in the plumbing setup. Proper diagnosis matters because replacing the wrong thing gets expensive quickly.

The reality is that labour and correct diagnosis are usually far more important than simply swapping parts. A good plumber should be able to work through the system properly, identify the actual cause and explain the options clearly before major money gets spent.

At All Done Plumbing & Drainage, we help homeowners across Inverloch, Bass Coast and South Gippsland with hot water repairs, replacements and emergency plumbing issues. Whether it is a storage system, continuous flow unit, electric or gas, we can help work out what has gone wrong and get your hot water running again as quickly as possible.

If your hot water has suddenly stopped working, the sooner it gets looked at, the better chance there is of preventing further damage or bigger repair costs later on.
